They are all absolutely beautiful, we are so happy with them. You were just so discrete, I don't think I noticed you photographing at all, yet you caught every moment and everyone looks so happy and natural! Thank you so much for being such a great photographer and for all the extra touches like the chocolates and password cards; we will definitely recommend you to anyone we know getting married."

Paul and Megan got married last summer at St Salvator's Chapel, with their reception being held in the Upper and Lower College Halls.

Megan wore a button up dress from Marylise, and paired it with a gorgeous belt and cathedral length veil (which, of course, got blown off in the St Andrews wind!!) - so simple, elegant and BEAUTIFUL! Her bridesmaids wore navy dresses that they wrapped and tied in different ways, making them all a little bit unique. They all had a few simple flowers in their hair, matching their white, yellow and gold bouquets.

With a mix of Dutch and Scottish heritage, their wedding was lovely and heartfelt, with friends and family traveling a long way to get to it. Megan made a speech in Dutch, and Paul wore tartan trews. They had readings in both Dutch and English during their ceremony, making it a perfect mix of their cultures.

We snuck off briefly to get some photographs on the beach, where there is the most incredible view back over St Andrews. Their wedding cake, made by 3D Cakes was one of the best I've tasted. A beautiful day to capture.

I still have availability from August 2018 onwards if you're planning your wedding and would like to enquire about my wedding photography services - I'd love to hear from you!

Ben & Becky - Magdalene College Wedding, Cambridge http://www.annajoyphotography.co.uk/blog/2017/12/ben-becky--magdalene-college-wedding-cambridge

Excitingly, I travelled quite far South for Ben & Becky's wedding this summer. I'm usually further North, but this time, I got more warmth, more daylight and a gorgeous, bright, wedding with a thunderstorm at the end of their outdoor ceremony for some added drama. Ben & Becky chose to get married in the Magdalene College of Cambridge University - a stunning location, surrounded by family and close friends. Larkspur Floral Design did a magnificent job with the bouquets, as well as with the hall decorations for the reception, and even found a couple of peonies right at the very end of the season.

Ben & Becky's day was so relaxed. They had an early ceremony, and two confetti throws (the first included rain) with rose petals and lavender buds dried over the previous months by a family member. Their wedding breakfast was a late lunch, which was followed by some emotional speeches. Then there was nothing specific planned until late afternoon, so some people went punting on the river Cam, while others played lawn games and chatted in the sun, before we all reunited for an evening of dancing, cake cutting (a four-tier thing of beauty with a little nod to Ben and Becky's love of cycling), chips and pick & mix eating. The day included a lot of laughs, and it was an absolute joy to witness and be a part of.

John & Kathie - Northumberland Couple Photographer http://www.annajoyphotography.co.uk/blog/2017/11/john-kathie---gosforth-couple-photographer A few weeks ago, I took some pictures of my mum and dad in their local park. 34 years married, 4 children raised, I have no idea how many house moves - but some overseas, trusting God and His direction for their lives, still in love, still having fun together.

I'm so glad I feel that these photographs are full of their personalities and show them as they are - especially that last one :D Taking photographs of people you know is in some ways easier but in many ways harder - there's a lot more pressure there to get what you know of them across in the photographs. I hope you enjoy these few!

Josh & Shona - Maryculter House Hotel Wedding, Aberdeen http://www.annajoyphotography.co.uk/blog/2017/10/josh-shona---maryculter-house-hotel-wedding-in-aberdeen Josh and Shona's wedding was one of the most emotional and beautiful days I've had the honour of being a part of. They are so in love and respect and cherish each other with such a passion, it was hard to keep from shedding a tear or two myself.

They got married at the church Shona attended in Aberdeen, Hebron Evangelical Church, which has an incredible window and the perfect aisle, it turns out, to practice the first dance down. Their reception was at Maryculter House Hotel, a lovely place with incredible grounds overlooking the river Dee.

With bright, beautiful florals in both the bouquets and the decorations, smart groomsmen and groom in kilts and bowties, bridesmaids in beautiful flowy lacy navy blue dresses with intricate headbands, and a bride with gorgeous hair mostly loose and a gown to die for, this wedding had everything of a Scottish fairytale!

Joshua and Shona were also adventurous enough to go a second couple shoot while the ceilidh was still going on, not only to cool down from all the dancing but also to capture a few more intimate moments by the river, which included some steep bank climbing - these moments at the end of the day are some of my favourites.

I still have limited availability for weddings in 2018 and am taking bookings for 2019, so drop me a line if you're interested in having me as your wedding photographer!

James & Kim - St Salvator's & Hotel du Vin Wedding, St Andrews http://www.annajoyphotography.co.uk/blog/2017/9/james-kim---st-salvators-hotel-du-vin-wedding-in-st-andrews James & Kim got married a couple of months ago in the gorgeous town of St Andrews at one of my favourite venues - the university's St Salvator's Chapel. Their reception was at the Hotel du Vin just along the road with photographs on the beach and at the bandstand in between.

There is so much I could say about this wedding, but I'll keep it brief, and let the photographs speak for themselves. I will say this though - I was genuinely impressed with how organised they were and how well the day ran even while including their One-year-old daughter in as much as they could. Having small children myself, I know this was no mean feat.

I was delighted to start the day off with the guys, getting a few photographs with them around St Andrews. The three men later shared the best man speech slot, and had people in tears of laughter. A great bunch. Then on to spend the rest of the morning with the women - what a wonderful team of bridesmaids Kim had - always ready to help out, encourage, reassure and support in any way they could.

With red and blush colours in their flowers and bridal party attire, James & Kim also had a Chinese New Year theme running through their reception - table flowers in dim sum baskets? Genius!

Their wedding was such a happy day - as I'm sure you'll see. If these images don't convince you, their first dance was to Paulo Nutini's Pencil Full Of Lead. Says it all.

The Duncan Family - Northumberland Family Photography http://www.annajoyphotography.co.uk/blog/2017/9/duncans---northumberland-family-photography At the very end of the Summer, I met up with this family three years after their first family photographs as a family of four. Lily is now a feisty toddler and her older sister, who was in her position last time I saw them, is now in school. We went to Newton-by-the-Sea, where they spend a lot of their time.  It's somewhere very special to them, and the obvious choice when I asked where they wanted to have their portrait session. It was a beautiful day, quiet on the beach, with many a sandcastle built and many a shell collected and shared.

Rebekah & Will - Northside Farm Wedding, Northumberland http://www.annajoyphotography.co.uk/blog/2017/8/rebekah-will---northside-farm-wedding-northumberland It was a real treat to drive a full six minutes to Will and Bee's new home in Gosforth for the bridal preparations. I'm usually on the road early, or even the night before.

As fits their style, everything was very relaxed, but organised. They have some gem friends, too, as most of their wedding decorations, including bouquets and button holes, were made by Anne; one of the bridesmaids was the in-house makeup artist, a colleague of Bee's made their cake, which was not only stunning but also absolutely delicious, and the whole wedding had the feeling of everybody joining in to help out. Their ceremony was a testimony of God's love and faithfulness, which is always a privilege to be a part of.

Their wedding day was one of the hottest of the summer, and perfect for photographs in Corbridge (respect to Bee for walking all that way in her heels) and a reception at Northside Farms - complete with outdoor games and a flying fox, which the bride and her grandma both went on. It was also perfect that Will does not wear trousers, ever, so altered his suit trousers to be shorts - he was one of the only men who was not completely sweltering all day!

As part of their reception, Will and Bee had a swing dance lesson, before swing dancing through the evening. As the sun began to set, we took a few minutes to pop outside and get a few more couple shots in the gorgeous golden light. Some of my favourites.

What a day!

I'm taking bookings for 2018, and have availability for March onwards, with only a few dates taken over the summer - get in touch if you're getting married next year and would be interested in me being your photographer.

Paul & Megan - North Berwick Beach Engagement http://www.annajoyphotography.co.uk/blog/2017/7/paul-megan---north-berwick-beach-engagement It is always fun for me to come back to places I used to go to as a student living in Edinburgh. North Berwick is synonymous to CU evenings with a BBQ on the beach to me. Or daytrips on a train with a friend commenting on how the green moss on the rocks feels like a wet dog or Bass Rock is maybe Puffin Island.

This time, I went there to meet Paul and Megan, who will be getting married in St Andrews in a couple of weeks. It was lovely to spend time with them and hopefully enable them to feel a little more at ease in front of my camera for their wedding day. I loved the colour combo Megan chose for her outfit, and how she matched so well with the surrounding sea. Although she ended up barefoot, as her shoes got very wet - hopefully not beyond repair! I'm looknig forward to seeing them again soon for their big day.

If you're getting married next year and would like to enquire about my wedding package, please do get in touch - I have 4 spots left for 2018, and am available a lot of weekends (and weekdays!) from March onwards.

James & Kim - Edinburgh Botanics Engagement Photography http://www.annajoyphotography.co.uk/blog/2017/7/james-kim---edinburgh-botanics-engagement-photography A week before their wedding, I met Kim and James in Inverleith Park and the Botanical Gardens in Edinburgh for their engagement shoot, which turned out to also be a family shoot, as they wanted to include their One-year-old daughter Sophie in it too. We were incredibly fortunate, because, as you will see, it had rained a lot the few days before the shoot, but it was a beautiful warm, sunny July morning that we chose to have the shoot. It was lovely to finally meet this lovely little family, and I'm now enjoying editing their beautiful wedding that happened in St Andrews a couple of weeks ago too.

Mike & Sophie - Cuddystone Hall Wedding, College Valley, Northumberland http://www.annajoyphotography.co.uk/blog/2017/6/mike-sophie---cuddystone-hall-wedding Back in April, I was at Cuddystone again. This time for the awesome wedding of Sophie and Mike. These guys have style and great taste. They chose this location to get married as it has a lot of meaning to Sophie's family. Amongst many other things, her family owns a scouts hut, and they got engaged here. It was an obvious choice, and one that took a lot of their southern friends as far North as they'd ever been and to countryside they didn't dream existed in the UK.

In keeping with the wild surroundings, they had some incredible flowers in the venues, in their bouquets and Sophie also had a flower crown. Wildflower, a company located in the Ouseburn area of Newcastle provided these and teamed up with Festoon Lighting, to make some effective and impressive decorations for their hall and marquee.

Sophie wore an Eliza Jane Howell gown, full of wonderful detail, and a cathedral length veil. Her bridesmaids all wore the same tops and had pastel coloured skirts to go with them. They all looked incredible, were comfortable, and it was a very clever way to accommodate for the maid of honour who was breastfeeding her son. The men wore tweed jackets and chinos for a stylish but relaxed look, which also fitted the location well.

The ceremony was simple, and had everyone laughing as the celebrant called Sophie the wrong name, instead calling her the name of one of their guests! Instead of confetti they came out of the church to people waving bells and ribbons, a unique touch.

They chose a great time to get married as the gorse was out in full bloom, giving an extra pep of colour to their couple photographs. One of Sophie's bridesmaids made the wedding cake - a naked cake decorated with flowers, and their guestbook was a globe for people to sign.

After a delicious three course meal and four speeches that had guests in stitches, Sophie and Mike had their first dance - what better choice than Paulo Nutini's Pencil Full of Lead. Then everyone took to the dancefloor!

Enjoy a few of my favourite photographs!

The Dale Family - Gosforth Lifestyle Photographer http://www.annajoyphotography.co.uk/blog/2017/6/the-dale-family---gosforth-family-photographer I met this family last summer and took some pictures in our local park for them - you can see a few of those here. May is a month of birthdays for them and with their oldest turning Three and their youngest hitting the great milestone that is One whole year out of the womb, they wanted to mark the occasion by doing something a bit fun - a cake smash. The girls were unsure to begin and didn't want to eat the cake without plates, but were eventually persuaded. Here are a few pictures from this lovely photoshoot. Happy birthday, Mini Dales!

TheMcIntosh Family - Wallington Hall, Northumberland http://www.annajoyphotography.co.uk/blog/2017/6/themcintosh-family---wallington-hall-northumberland I love this family, their interactions and visiting National Trust properties. Family sessions are usually a good opportunity for a few posed family shots, then for the children to let off steam, and plenty of pictures of everyone enjoying themselves. This session involved a lot of running, climbing trees, hide and seek, practical jokes and sword fights. So these photographs capture their personalities and interactions in raw form, which is the best way. Enjoy!

Peter & Ruth - Riverdale Barn Wedding, Northern Ireland http://www.annajoyphotography.co.uk/blog/2017/5/peter-ruth---riverdale-barn-wedding-northern-ireland I've known Peter and Ruth for about 10 years - maybe more. We met in Edinburgh, when we were all students, another lifetime ago. Five years ago, Ruth was my wedding photographer. She gave us such incredible pictures that I was really quite nervous when I agreed to be their wedding photographer. But also delighted, and so excited to see them finally exchange vows.

Their wedding day was so relaxed and fitted them to a tee. Ruth got ready with her four bridesmaids in her family home. She chose a gorgeous lace and sequin-detailed dress with a train, no veil but a beautiful headband. She was radiant! Her bridesmaids wore lilac flowy dresses, their own shoes and were given Cadbury purple shawls to protect them from the March weather. The ceremony took place in the church Ruth attends when she's back in Northern Ireland, Wellington Presbyterian Church.

Ruth (with some help) made a lot of the decorations, including all of the many many (paper) flowers in the bouquets and around the reception. After some refreshments at church and group photographs, everyone drove South to Riverdale Barn, a lovely venue, for dinner, speeches, and a ceilidh. The dining hall was set out with long banqueting tables, elegantly decorated with fairy lights, small vases of paper flowers and table names. Ruth and Peter decided to name the tables after train stations. Not only did this fit in with their general map theme, they have also done a lot of rail travel over the course of their relationship. No doubt this will continue for many years to come!

In true Northern Irish tradition, there were four speeches, with each of the fathers giving one. The ceilidh was a lively affair which was really cool and reminiscent of the years I (and they!) lived in Scotland. To end the day on a high, the new Mr & Mrs Bowen left through an arch of sparklers. SO fun!

Enjoy a few of my favourite pictures of this gorgeous day!

It is a lovely park with an old hall, museum and a Victorian Road as part of the museum. I've shot there before. I love it.

Ben and Becky were a delight, and could not stop smiling. They love the outdoors and walk and cycle a lot. On their shoot, we walk by the river Tees and played on the swings. I think they looked like they were enjoying themselves so much the kids suddenly wanted to play on the swings too. I hope you feel the joy looking through these.

Our plan was to go to Gibside for a sunset walk around, but it turns out that the National Trust is still on winter time and it closed before we'd planned to meet. So we went to Derwent Walk Country Park a short drive away. We caught the sunset and stayed on the high road (no one took the low road - sorry, I'm recently back from a lovely break to Scotland! Please ignore if you don't get the reference and chortle quietly to yourself if you do.) By the time we'd finished, it was dark, we'd walked about 10,000 steps, had fun together and got some pretty cute shots. To see the surrounding Cheviot hills with a dusting of snow was breathtaking. I came to this gorgeous part of Northumberland, to meet Sophie and Mike who have a special attachment to this particular location - many a birthday party, family gathering, wedding, and engagement (including their own) have happened here, in and around a scouts hut that belongs to Sophie's family. They have chosen to marry here as well, so I'll be back photographing them in the Spring. What an absolutely lovely pair they are, obviously made for each other and so friendly and welcoming. I can't wait to see them again, this time in their wedding gear.

Danie & Matt - Dunstanburgh Castle Engagement, Northumberland http://www.annajoyphotography.co.uk/blog/2017/2/danie-matt---dunstanburgh-castle-engagement-northumberland Happy Valentine's Day! Today's post is full of love and romance, very appropriately! The engagement season of 2017 has begun.

Time to brag on my county again, I LOVE Northumberland. Especially on a quiet, crisp, sunny morning, like this February morning. Danie and Matt are big National Trust fans, and Dunstanburgh castle has the perfect mix of coast, ruined castle epicness (has to be a word, right?!) and fields of sheep. We met just after sunrise when there was still some gold in the morning light and the paths were deserted. Dunstanburgh Castle, it turns out, is closed on Winter weekdays. But not the sort to be defeated (Danie and Matt had travelled from the other side of the country for this), we scaled the 5-bar gate and walked through the ruins anyway (we are all NT members so didn't take the opportunity to go without paying - I'm not THAT much of a rebel!). It was worth the effort, as you can see.

My advice, get off the internet and make new memories with the people around you. That is what will make it great.

2016 was a busy year. As well as loads of photography work, it included a 3-week long road trip around Eastern Europe and Scandinavia, a house move and a transition from life with a baby and a toddler to life with two toddlers. it's felt full on many a time. But there have been some exhilarating and memorable moments, not least for the people I have photographed this year.

With another two family sessions booked in before the end of the year (!) this video is not my whole 2016 - Best Of. But I don't plan to do any work at my computer over Christmas and New Year, so I thought I'd make this now and share a few from each of the sessions once they're posted to their owners in January. So for now, enjoy this short sum up of 2016 for AnnaJoy Photography.

See you all in January for another busy year - twice as many weddings booked in, just to start off... If you'd like me to photograph you in 2017, get in touch!
